MAX - Lynn Raye Harris
Former Navy SEAL Max Brannigan is a loner with a strong protective streak and an ocean of survivor’s guilt that drives him to take risks no sane man would take. When he gets the news his billionaire father died and left him a horse farm in Kentucky, he’s busy protecting American military contractors in a war zone. The first moment he’s able, he’ll fly back to the US and dispose of the farm. What does a man like him need horses for anyway? Of all the things his father could have left him, this certainly ranks up there as the most bizarre.
Elinor Applegate lives for her horses, but life on the farm isn’t easy. Once-thriving Applegate Farm has fallen on hard times in the past few years. Only an influx of cash from her mother’s old friend enabled Ellie to keep the family operation going. All her hopes to turn around the business and buy back the land lie on the hooves of a colt destined to greatness. She’s just got to get him there first.
But when sexy, ruthless, infuriating Max Brannigan shows up, Ellie realizes her troubles are far worse than she thought. He knows nothing about horses—and he cares less than nothing about her dreams. To Max, the horses are useless and have to go—in spite of the fact that every encounter with Ellie only makes him want to drag her into his arms and kiss the fire right out of her. But Ellie will fight hard to keep her dreams alive, even if she has to fight dirty. Max has spent most of his life protecting people from danger—but can he protect himself when Ellie launches a full-scale assault against the walls surrounding his heart?

Max 7 Brides for 7 Brothers Book 5 Volume 5 Lynn Raye Harris 9781941002216 Books
This is book #5 in the 7 brides for7 brothers series which I LOVE!!! Each book so far has been equally as good as the others, which is unusual in a series where each book is written by a different author. This was a new author to me so I was anxious to read the book and I was not disappointed! Each of the brothers so far have receive odd legacies from their recently-deceased father, so Max is sure his will be equally strange. He's right - he receives a deed to a horse farm. There are also conditions to his legacy - he must visit the farm and he can't sell it for a year. After his career in the military, he's ready to move forward with his own dreams, which can be funded when he sells the farm. So he visits...and meets Ellie. Her mother was the founding force behind the farm and a very good childhood friend of Max's mother. Ellie is struggling financially after her mother's death but has her own dreams of rebuilding the farm to its former glory with her championship horse, Champ. Max and Ellie are at opposite sides of the issue, but greatly attracted to each other. Max moves in while looking over the farm and books and they end up falling for each other. After some minor angst (the norm for romances it seems), Max realizes that Ellie and the farm are exactly what he needs. My only complaint with this book was that the ending was fairly abrupt, but that still didn't take away from my enjoyment of the story! An interesting aspect of this story was that the horses on the farm were not racehorses but saddlebreds, which I had never heard of.

Max 7 Brides for 7 Brothers Book 5 Volume 5 Lynn Raye Harris 9781941002216 Books Reviews
This is a wonderful addition to the 7 Brides for 7 Brothers Series. Lynn Raye Harris has brought together two very strong willed and strong minded people who strike immediate sparks off each other and when they come together, it's fantastic! Max was given the deed to Ellie's horse farm as an inheritance from his father, who loaned Ellie's mom some money for the horse farm. Now, both Max's dad and Ellie's mom are gone and Ellie has to decide whether or not to agree to sell her farm like Max wants to do. This is where the main conflict in the story takes place. Ellie is afraid to get involved with anyone because she's afraid that person will leave her like everyone else has done. Max is convinced that love doesn't exist and that he is incapable of giving and receiving love. He also believes that life on a horse ranch would bore him to tears. I don't want to give too much away so the last thing I will say is the author was able to do something at the end of the book that usually drives me insane and infuriates me; yet, in this instance, this particular thing actually works and helps to further the story, so I appreciated how the author ended the book. Well done!
I really love Miss Harris' "HOT" series of books and her writing style in general - big fan! So, when I saw that she was participating in a multi-author series, I knew that even if the rest of the books didn't interest me, I'd like her contribution. HAHA I feel I should point out that I haven't read the other books yet - "Max" is definitely a book that can stand on it's own, so if you like Lynn Raye Harris's style, you can feel 100% confident that you'll not only enjoy this, but also have no trouble jumping into things in the series at this point, if you want to.
OK, so with that out of the way...
The idea is that there are seven men, all brothers, who have recently lost their very wealthy father. Max didn't have a very close relationship with dear old Dad, and from his thoughts and comments, it seems to be the same for the rest of his siblings, as well. They lost their mother at a fairly young age, and their father more or less disconnected from their lives.
When Max grew up, he enlisted in the Navy and then became a SEAL. He could have come home when he was notified of his father's death, but he chose not to. Now he's Stateside and finally looking into what his father left him in his will. It's been a few months since his father's death and Max has since separated from the Navy. These days he works for a group that basically specializes in mercenaries, and he's spent most of his time in combat zones. He's restless and not 100% happy with his job any more, so when he discovers that his father left him a horse farm in Kentucky, he assumes it's a place that raises race horses. He thinks it could sell it for a tidy sum and use the cash to bankroll his dream of starting his own security company. He knows he could wait a few years, when he'll come into a very large sum of money that's in a trust for him, but he wants to do things his way, on his own. Seems like a good idea, but there's a major wrench thrown in the works when he arrives at the farm to discover that not only does this place NOT raise race horses, but it's struggling to even make ends meet.
And he can't sell it until the one year anniversary of his father's death. Unless, of course, he can convince the current occupant to sell and split the proceeds with him.
Ellie is a woman struggling to hold on to her family heritage by her fingertips. The farm has been in her family for generations, but when her mother became terminally ill, it took everything they both had to pay her medical bills and keep things afloat. Before her death, her mother took a sizeable loan from Max's father, and Ellie has been faithfully paying it back every month, as much as she can. If she can finish training her prize Saddlebred stallion, win some competitions, and then sell him to the highest bidder, she can get out from under debt and have a chance to bring the farm back from the brink. She's more than shocked to learn that the farm was left to Max, and there's no way she'll agree to sell. She just needs a little more time!
Max is determined to make his own way; to leave foreign battlefields behind, and build his dream. Ellie is determined to rebuild all her mother's family worked so hard to build, generation after generation.
It's a great story of two strong people who have their own individual ideas of what they want from life, and how to get there. They're both very likeable people. At first, I was really frustrated with Max, because honestly, why couldn't he wait a few years and use his inheritance to start his company? He could have stayed at the farm and helped Ellie get the farm back in her name if he didn't want to go back to his job as a gun for hire. I recognize that it's not really his personality, but it was still an option. It didn't feel like it was his nature to willfully crush someone else's dream, either, so...
Ellie is a strong person with a brutal daily schedule. I definitely couldn't do all she does in a day! I wanted her to get that farm back in the worst way! I appreciated her fair-mindedness, but I thought she went from being 100% determined to keep Max from "winning" to acceptance and, frankly, almost defeat, a little too quickly. Maybe I felt that way because the book takes place over a very short amount of time?
Max and Ellie have terrific chemistry, and deep down, they're both good, caring people who have a lot of common sense. I think if the timeline of the book were longer, the changes in their attitudes towards each other would have felt completely natural to me. It felt just a tad rushed, but the ending was still satisfying.
If you're not familiar with Lynn Raye Harris' books, they're romances, and can get pretty steamy. If you don't care to read sex scenes, I suggest you pass. But if you're reading this, you probably DO like that sort of thing, so... -) Enjoy!
**Note to fans of Miss Harris' "HOT" series I got a delicious thrill, seeing a well-known character from the HOT books pop up in "Max". Not going to give anything away of course - spoilers are just so not classy. I just love stuff like that though. You'll know what I mean when you read it. I love when good authors collaborate and have their worlds combine! It's something that's hard to do, and I thought "Max" did it beautifully.
Lynn Raye Harris is the reason I started this series and I have been introduced to four other phenomenal writers so far. I can't wait to read the last two and see how I feel about those authors.
So, obviously I'm a fan of Harris. This book is no different. Still a fan. Well written, good story, two thumbs up.
Max received a very strange inheritance from his dad. A horse farm. He expects race horses. What he gets is anything but. Insert Ellie - the prior owner of the farm whose mother had to borrow money from Max's dad in order to pay for her medical expenses and keep the farm running. Mother has passed and Ellie is doing everything she can to keep the farm going.
The only bad part of these books is the theme of these men feeling like they aren't made for relationships. It gets tiresome, but since there are seven different authors, it's approached in a new way each book. It makes it not so annoying.
Great series. Looking forward to James and Finn!
